Re: Gooney - being reborn
Probably right there. I think using the standard manifold would make the boost piping horrendously complicated. I still do like the idea of using the standard manifold to start off with. I might see if I can get a cheap small intercooler with the inlet and outlet on the same side, maybe a G60 one.
Has anyone got a pic of a standard G intercooler?

Re: Gooney - being reborn
Yeah the boost piping is a bit convoluted with the standard intake. On my MK2 it came down out of the turbo, under the sump, up to the front of the car, into the RS Turbo IC, out of that, over the air flow meter and into the throttle.
Mind you, it was only a weedy little T25, so the pipework wasn't big bore (about 2" IIRC) and lag was negligable.
I think you'd like it with the stock intake. The torque will give you a bit of a shock.
The original Stealth conversion running 10.5psi made 130lb/ft at 2000rpm, (which is roughly what the NA one makes as a peak at 4500rpm!), 190lb-ft at 3000rpm and 216lb-ft at 4500rpm.
It's such a sweet engine and REALLY suits the character of MK2 Golfs and Corrados waaaaaay better than a 1.8T conversion.

Re: Gooney - being reborn
I'm likely those torque figures very much. Not sure how I'd route the turbo piping though. Wouldn't the pipe be way too low down under the sump? The car isn't that low, but I'd rather not go knocking it on speed bumps or something

Re: Gooney - being reborn
That intercooler is 800mm from mounting point to mounting point, and at a guess is 880mm total width. I get the distinct feeling, it isn't going to fit

Re: Gooney - being reborn
Which intercooler? The RST one fits in perfectly next to a MK2 16V radiator, it looked factory
As for the boost pipe under the sump, well it was kind of to the side of the sump a bit and the pipe was flatted down a bit and bolted onto the block. it was all pukka Turbo technics stuff and looked factory! Bear in mind 1.8Ts with the twin ICs take pretty much the same boost path.....

It's one of and LT. There are some pictures of it on page 5
When you say to the side of the sump, are we talking the pulley end?

Ghetto turbo to start with will be the KR with a spacer.
Ultimately, gonna go ABF with 2E rods and some forged pistons.

cool,i was just wondering if you wee going the 2e route still(16v head/8v bottom end).
I think stacked gaskets will be better.

Re: Gooney - being reborn
Dunno at the mo. Got a few 'issues' with the VR, that need sorting first.
Might get some brake fluid end of next week, and go from there

Re: Gooney - being reborn
Well, had a good chat with Carleena today, and we've decided to turn Gooney into a track car. That way we both enjoy it! Still plan for getting him road legal after Christmas, and getting MS on him, but will be considering track related paraphinalia for the future
