I mean it's a sound, tried and tested build the old 16vT. And the rest of us are only having the one turbo.

Yeah, but you will have a few more valves and a couple more cylinders! Twin turbo is the way forward geek Could go for a single setup first, then progress to the twin.....I suppose

I certainly agree mate, twin turbo set up can definitely be the future but if you want it up and running then simple might be a good start.

You know what i've been like with changing ideas/second thoughts and worries etc, maybe you should do what you told me and just not worry about it until you're almost ready to start. ie after the wedding.

Indeed mate, but I'm happy enough thinking about it. It keeps me sane, pondering over which direction to go in. I also love the idea of an Eaton'd VR Smile

Re: Gooney, son of Badcrumble

Post by mrbeige on Thu Jul 16, 2009 12:15 pm

Ok, so bringing myself back down from the clouds, I'm starting to think more clearly about what I plan to do. With the wedding only about 2 months away, I'm starting to consider my plan of action for Project Gooney-Turbot.

I think the first stop will be of course to get him on the road, i.e. MOT and tidy up the exterior as best I can, so once that's done, this shall be the course of action....

1) Fit MS using the standard dizzy and standard ignition coil, but use a VR airbox, Mk4 1.8T IAT sensor, generic TPS, (or indeed if I can find one, a Passat Auto throttle body), Innovate Wideband with sensor mounted at the bottom of the downpipe**, standard inlet, mk4 1.8T injectors fitted using G60 injector inserts etc etc.

2) I'll think about this later, but considering running the turbo on the standard engine with a spacer plate, for proof of concept (if you catch my drift), whilst I build up the 'proper' engine in the garage. Think I'm going to dump the 2E block and find myself an ABF, as it has crank trigger wheel in the block, but maybe either use the 2E rods and some forged pistons or indeed get some forged rods too.

3) I have a further pipe dream that involves a DSG gearbox and a CAN gateway module, that the company I work for produces, to make it all work, but that is very much pie in the sky.

** Actually, is that the best place to mount it, or would it be better much closer to the exhaust port but just running off one cylinder?

All i know is it needs mounting on the top of the pipe to prevent moisture getting in, although mine was mounted on the side.

I would say your better off having it not so close to the ports.

If I was Stu...
Get the car running first .
Then experiment with MS and get comfortable with it.
Then run a simple single cheap as pos (If there is such a thing)turbo setup on stacked gaskets, spacer or 8v bottom end. Then get creative .. Smile
Twin turbo/twin charged or just one large turbo with bullet proof bottom end etc etc
You'll find while your working down the list some of the things you purchase can be re-used on any other projects also..ie fmic large injectors intake manifolds etc so just build up in strages.
Don't mean to be patronizing just trying to keep you on track because I know you have an over active imagination.
Razz Smile

Ask for turbo accessories from your wedding guests.
I'm sure you have enough cutlery and house hold appliances already.
1) Fit MS using the standard dizzy and standard ignition coil,

Not put off by what happened with Dec then?
pah,it will be good to get over that hump.

Hmmm, ok, that was what I was thinking too Smile

This was my thinking too. As you say I can reuse parts as the engine evolves. I quite like the idea of ghetto turbo anyway Smile

Not at all mate, I need someone to ground me from time to time Smile

Very very true, but we've sent out the invites and gift list now. Do you think Garrett would accept John Lewis vouchers?

Not really no. I'd like to get to the bottom of that to be fair. Good to have the experience with that setup anyway.

Buy my engine and get creative with that, you have seen it in the flesh so you konw there is plenty of scope to get creative.

Personally i say sod getting it on the road now as you will always be wanting it on the road everytime it comes off, get jiggy now not later.

Well, I'd like to think that I could get it on the road first and at least drive the damn thing. It's been sat there for 18months now, so I think it's matured fairly well!

I'd like to get the MS installed within a weekend (not running I may add), to allow me to test/tune it on the road at least legally.

best to test the MS on a factory working car setup 1st.If it doesn't start right away you at least know that it isn't a mechanical issue.
Less variables to worry about. And then you get the satisfaction of achieving a little goal b4 u move on.

This is very true, and I think it's the way forward. Baby steps, as they say. Smile
